Adventures With Wildlife

Workshops 2008
Ben will be running a series of wildlife photography workshops during 2008. Each will be a full day of photography located in and around the outstanding Peak District National Park. Places will be booked on a first come first served basis, and will be limited to 6 people to ensure that all participants get full benefit from Ben's tuition and practical advice. In addition to answering any questions that people might ask, Ben will also give instruction on various field techniques including: Getting close to your subject, creating sharp images, making correct exposures in tricky lighting situations, designing the picture space and capturing action and behaviour.
January: Winter wildfowl
With winter well and truly upon us, the day will be spent at Martin Mere WWT reserve, photographing various species of wildfowl. The highlight of the day will be the whooper swan feeding, which always guarantees spectacular opportunities.
February: Winter landscapes on the gritstone edges of the Dark Peak
This workshop will be a day spent at Stanage Edge. The rugged beauty of the gritstone rocks and expansive heather moorland are perfect for capturing wild and atmospheric winter landscapes. There will also be the chance of photographing red grouse.
March: Red squirrels
These endearing mammals will be the focus of this late winter workshop. The squirrels at Formby Point are incredibly confiding, so close encounters are guaranteed. There may also be the chance to photograph various waders at dusk.
April: Woodland birds
Participants will have the use of a hide and well-established feeding station to photograph various species of woodland birds. Possible species include blue, great and long-tailed tit, jays, thrushes and blackbirds, robin, great spotted woodpecker and if lucky - the local sparrowhawk! Various perches will be used to ensure a variety of photographic opportunities.
May and June: Dippers
The dipper will be the focus of this early summer workshop. It will take place in arguably the two best dipper locations in the UK. A full day will be spent photographing these delightful birds, with the added chance of capturing grey wagtails and perhaps even water voles! Due to the popularity of this workshop, it will be run in both May and June.
July: Macro photography
With high summer approaching, most butterflies are on the wing and can be found easily. The day will be spent at Coombes Valley RSPB reserve, concentrating on the variety of butterflies and flowers that can be found in this enchanting woodland.
August: Red grouse
With the heather in flower, the open moors of the dark peak during summer is the perfect backdrop for capturing striking images of this charismatic bird.
September: British raptors and owls
All participants will have the opportunity of photographing a number of different species of captive raptors and owls in their natural habitat. The beautiful Goyt Valley will be the location.
October: Red deer rutting
One of Ben's favourite months of the year, October heralds the start of the annual red deer rut. The location for this workshop will be Lyme Park, the emphasis on capturing evocative, behavioural shots of stags as they strut their stuff! Roaring and fighting shots can be expected, and all of course in the wonderful landscape of Lyme Park.
November: Seal pups
November is pupping time for the grey seals on the Lincolnshire coast. This workshop will be a full day at Donna Nook, where large numbers of seals come ashore each year to give birth to their pups. A spectacle not to be missed! Extremely close encounters are guaranteed, so no need for long lenses. And remember to wrap up warm!
Prices for each workshop will be just £110.00. For further details including dates, and a booking form, please contact the office.
The One to One Experience
New for 2006, Ben is now offering one to one workshops, designed to give his clients the best possible chance to improve their wildlife photography. These are structured days to suit people of any skill level, and each will be customised to benefit the needs of the client. The day will be geared towards the participant, and will be arranged to meet their desires.
Ben will be there to instruct on a variety of photographic and field craft skills, a good part of the day will also be spent working on expanding creativity and enhancing the clients personal vision. Ultimately, the one to one experience is designed to help you the participant to learn new ways of capturing spectacular images.
